How it feels

Mostly a lot of sitting back. The scaler hums and sprays a little water; if anything twinges, raise your left hand and we stop. You can keep your headphones in.

Steps

  1. We ask what has changed since last time and listen first.

  2. Your hygienist checks the gums with a soft probe and reads the numbers aloud.

  3. Scaling and polishing, at a pace you set.

  4. The dentist looks at every tooth, with X-rays only if they will change the plan.

  5. You leave with a short written note: what is fine, what to watch, what to book.

Aftercare

Eat and drink as normal. Gums can feel a little tender for a day if they were inflamed; a soft brush and warm salt water help.

Questions

How often should I come in?

Most people do well every six months. If your gums need closer attention we may suggest every three or four, and we will say why.

Do I need X-rays every time?

No. We take them when they will tell us something new, usually once a year for bitewings.
